__________
BACKGROUND
__________
Vehicle for Change Project
West Kent YMCA has been granted £454,567 from the Big Lottery Fund Young People’s Fund for a four-year project to reach out to disadvantaged, at risk and hard to reach young people aged 13 to 25.
The Project started in 2010 and will employ a Project Leader and two Detached Youth Workers, with a specially equipped and accessible vehicle to deliver training, resources and support in isolated and rural communities. The Project will work in partnership with local organisations and trainers with a wide range of skills and interests to engage with vulnerable young people, providing:
• A focus to bring disadvantaged young people together and to draw in isolated young people
• A welcoming, safe place for advice and information on services and issues affecting young people
• A training “hub” to deliver training and provide a “taster” of a variety of other opportunities locally, from motorcycle mechanics to child care, boxing, carpentry, plumbing, IT or life skills
• A meeting place to bring hard to reach young people together with various agencies to express individual voices and collective need
The project will help achieve the specific goals of Every Child Matters through information, training and individual support, empowering young people to build a better future. It will increase understanding of the needs of the hardest to reach and disadvantaged young people and give them a voice, enabling them to affect what happens in their own lives and in their communities.
Young people have been involved in developing this project from the very beginning and will continue to be involved - helping with recruitment of project staff and setting up the mobile resource unit, deciding where the resource vehicle goes and what training or information we provide, going out on the vehicle with staff and other agencies, steering and promoting the project, and enabling the voice of young people across West Kent to be heard.

SUMMARY OF OUTCOMES
===================
Outcome 1: By the end of the project, 60 young people will have been actively involved in management of the projects delivered by West Kent YMCA and on the steering group of this new mobile out-reach project. Young people will have been similarly encouraged and supported to participate in wider youth forums and debates. This will enable them to develop personal skills and confidence and directly influence service planning and delivery through involvement in developing, running and reviewing our own and other organisations’ policies and services. This model will be shared with other agencies, statutory and voluntary, to help influence other service providers.
(BIG 1 – more organisations involve young people in developing, running and reviewing policies and services)
Outcome 2: By the end of the project we will have identified two new centres for supported vocational training delivery, training and support needs in those areas, and the resources needed to begin service delivery
(BIG 2 – Organisations and the young people’s sector have improved young people’s services)
Outcome 3: By the end of the project we will have worked with 20 statutory and voluntary agencies through our mobile delivery unit to provide 150 opportunities for them to interface with 750 young people in various locations, rural and urban, across West Kent. As well as providing a much needed source of support for young people, this also importantly provides the opportunity for these agencies to meet with and hear the voice of young people in their own communities. This will include targeted work with young people from ethnic minority groups and isolated young people, such as young carers.
(BIG 3 – Organisations and the young people’s sector understand the needs of young people better.)
Outcome 4: 750 young people will receive information, advice and support from West Kent YMCA and, through the mobile delivery unit, 20 other agencies to help them address their individual and personal issues and grow in confidence and independence - protecting them from harm and neglect and enabling them to build their future.
(ECM 2 – Staying Safe: being protected from harm and neglect, growing up able to look after yourself.)
Outcome 5: 200 young people will take part in training taster days, longer courses and activity days, learning new vocational life skills, trying out new experiences, discovering options for their future development, and growing in confidence and independence. Type/length of courses and experiences offered will reflect input of young people on steering group and in the community and their expressed needs/interests.
(ECM 3 – Enjoying and Achieving – getting the most out of life, developing skills for adulthood)
Outcome 6: 240 young people will work directly in their local communities on specific projects (such as a community garden, painting a communal area, or helping at a child care or old people’s centre) to develop their appreciation and respect for their community, build confidence and personal skills, and enhance how young people are perceived.
(ECM 4 – Making a positive contribution – giving back to the local community and society, not offending or behaving anti-socially.)
