Our Patrons and Trustees

PATRONS

We are very fortunate to have two Patrons who kindly support and promote our work.

The Right Honourable, The Lord Evans of Weardale, Jonathan Evans, KCB DL

The Rt Rev. the Lord Bishop of Rochester, James Langstaff

Our Patrons take a keen interest in our work and very kindly support our work, our ethos, our clients, volunteers and staff.

Both became members of the House of Lords since becoming Patrons of YMCA West Kent.

Like any charity we are dependent on a dedicated team of volunteers who are our Charity Trustees and as we are incorporated as a company limited by Guarantee, they are also our Company Directors.

As a Board they exercise ultimate control for governance of the Charity and Trading Company and how we meet our charitable objects and legal requirements.

Our Trustees fully support the Christian ethos of the Charity, and abide by the board code of conduct, conflict of interest policy and other staff & volunteer policies.

TRUSTEES

We are dependent on volunteers who act as trustees.

Ann Furminger – Chair of Trustees

My background is as a teacher, manager and leader with extensive experience of working in diverse and fast moving operational settings. This has included working in the public, private and voluntary sector in roles which have included Head of Department in two secondary schools, Head of Education and Head of Adolescent Services at The Priory Ticehurst House, Director of Service Delivery and Deputy CEO at CXK Ltd, Interim CEO of Young Kent and more recently Relationship Services Manager for Family Action where I oversee CAFCASS commissioned contracts and an abuse and rape crisis counselling service. My career has been largely based in the South East although the CAFCASS contracts I manage now are based throughout the country.

My professional interests lie in delivering high quality services which make a positive difference to the lives of young people and their families. More recently I have been working 3 days a week in order to achieve a better work life balance, aiming to spend more time with my family – I have two grown up daughters and a grandchild on the way - and following my own personal interests which include playing sport, travel and entertaining.

Mark Farrar

A Chartered Accountant with 25 years experience mainly gained in Financial Services in the City of London, I have recently started working part-time to enable me to spend more time on my charity trusteeships, with family and other interests.

Alongside being West Kent’s Finance trustee, I fulfil a similar role with Crosslight, which delivers debt advice and money management skills in West Kent, London and beyond. I am also a trustee of Thames Gateway YMCA, primarily representing West Kent as part of the larger charity group of which we are part. I really enjoy bringing my professional skills to bear in the smaller scale settings of these fantastic charities where the pound for pound impact delivered is so much greater than I see in my day to day work. I have been involved with YMCA West Kent since 1998, when I was Treasurer for several years before having to relinquish that role due to work and family commitments, picking it up again in 2018.

My wife and I live in Tonbridge and have 3 largely grown up children. We are members of Tonbridge Baptist Church and also enjoy walking, gardening and other increasingly middle-aged pursuits.

Lady Jackie Evans

Lady Evans trained as a teacher after graduating from Bristol University and has taught at both secondary and primary levels. She also has experience as a School governor, has served as Chair of the Management Committee of a Pre-School and has had direct experience of work with children and young people in a voluntary capacity. Jackie currently chairs the Board of Trustees of the Tenax Schools Trust, a Church of England multi-academy trust with eight schools in the Rochester and Chichester Dioceses.

She became a trustee of YMCA West Kent in 2013. Her husband is a Patron of YMCA West Kent. They have three grown-up children and a grandchild.

Heather Evernden

My career has been spent in education in a wide range of different roles, both in the classroom and in senior management. When my children were young, I worked in Adult Education, also as a supply teacher, private tutor and I ran drama classes. I spent many years at Tonbridge Grammar School working as an English Teacher, Head of Key Stage, Safeguarding Lead, Head of English and Deputy Head of the school. I retired from school four years early, to become a Lead Practitioner team leader in Humanities, working with many schools, throughout the country, on behalf of The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. At the same time, I fulfilled a long held ambition to run a library and moved to a local school part-time to do just that!

As a Trustee for YMCA West Kent, I have taken a particular interest in our education programmes and in staff well-being. I am a member of a local church and play an active part in church and community life. I am the Parish Safeguarding Officer for our parish.

I garden enthusiastically, read compulsively and spend as much time as I can with our two grandsons

Geraldine Wenham

Now in my 70's I have lived in Tunbridge Wells all my life and have seen a vast number of changes in the area. I attended Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar School and West Kent College and have held a variety of administrative roles in my career. I also worked as a Special Educational Needs Caseworker for KCC before joining YMCA West Kent as their first Housing Manager in 1993. I finished my [paid] working life as a Medical Secretary seconded to Kent Social Services with Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

I have been a Trustee of YMCA West Kent for over 20 years. I have a Diploma in Theology [University of Wales] and have been a Licensed Lay Reader with Rochester Diocese since 2002. I am divorced and have one son who is 44, married and living in Tunbridge Wells.

In addition to my work in St Luke, Tunbridge Wells, I am a church representative on the local Deanery Synod. I am also a member of TW U3A, and enjoy walking, reading and gardening.
